We Need A Website That Lists The Worlds Needeiest People

On September 24, 2008, as part of it's 10th birthday web site blog, Google announced it's newest project to help people. This time it's a "call for ideas..." as Google's 10 to the 100th web site puts it, "...to change the world by helping as many people as possible."

On September 24, late in the evening I believe I may have submitted the winning entry. As soon as I read the criteria and the purpose of the competition, I knew what the answer was.

Below is a revised transcript of my submission. Tell us what you think!

FYI - While Google is offering $10,000,000 toward the winning project ideas, I would collect no money for submitting the idea, nor am I required to oversee the project. What I would get is, "good karma and the satisfaction of knowing that (my) idea might truly help a lot of people."

Submitted by J.Robert W.A. Dubois, to Google's 10 to the 100th web site as follows:

Q - What one sentence best describes your idea?

There should be a web site that accurately tracks who are the neediest people in the world, ranks them, then promotes the list to all appropriate charity organizations, suggesting that the greatest funds go to the neediest people.

Q - Describe your idea in more depth.

When people want to contribute to a charity it can be difficult to decide which one would be best. Which ones are most reputable - which ones provide the most benefits to the needy - which ones do we avoid - which ones actually deliver the highest percentage of donations - should we donate locally or not - what about one large donation to a variety of charities and which ones.

The web site can be used to answer all these concerns and more. It could not only track the neediest people, but also list charity organizations who use the web site. Then allow people, who donate to any charity organization, to rate and comment on any of the charity organizations they have tried out.

The web site can also provide links to each charity organization so people who donate can get further information about the charity organization.

The idea is relatively easy to implement.

No one is better than Google at assembling the statistics needed as well as tracking user comments and rankings.

Q - What problem or issue does your idea address?

This would get the greatest donations to the neediest people and provide an authoritative place to make decisions about where we should donate.

Q - If your idea were to become a reality, who would benefit the most and how?

The world's neediest people would benefit most by (achieving) the highest ranking on the web site. The web site would urge everyone to donate a high percentage of funds to those at the top of the list and lower percentages as you move down the list.

Q - What are the initial steps required to get this idea off the ground?

Decide on leadership, non-profit or for-profit, corporate structure, management and staff, programmers and designers.

Q - Describe the optimal outcome should your idea be selected and successfully implemented. How would you measure it?

The best outcome I can imagine is an end to world poverty. Progress would be easy to measure, as the list 'should' grow more and more difficult to fill - until there are no more needy people - anywhere in the world.

Optional Q - If you'd like to recommend a specific organization, or the ideal type of organization, to execute your plan, please do so here.

Google is one of the best organizations to spearehead an end to world poverty using internet technologies. 09/25/08
